Just Say No to Little Black Cube Speakers!
You’ve seen them on TV, you’ve seen them in every electronics store around, you maybe have even seen them at an a little black cube speaker corporate store.
Those cute little cube speakers are rather intriguing aren’t they? Small, unobtrusive, something your wife will let you have in the living room, and they seem to sound really good!
Well let me tell you the truth. It’s an illusion. The store displays are carefully set up to play tricks on your ears and make these cheap paper cone speakers seem like they are actually worth their exorbitant price tag.
They are not!
The company that make them is not a speaker company. They are a marketing company. They don’t want you to know this, in fact they like to promote themselves as innovators, and that much is true. Their slogan promisses that they do a lot of research to create better sound quality, which is a lie if there ever was one. The only thing they research is how to make cheap speakers that sound good in the store. They exceed and finding innovative way to increase profit margins by selling low cost generic components in fancy boxes that make them seem worthwhile. Essentially little black cube speakers have good ” lifestyle design “, which unfortunately means terrible speaker design. For thousands of dollars you get ultra cheap paper cone woofers that you could in all honestly buy on eBay for twenty bucks.
You’ll find magazine reviews that praise these speakers. Next time you read one, take a minute and count the number and advertising pages in that magazine this company has purchased. Now as yourself why they might have received such a positive review.
There are so many fantastic speaker companies out there selling top notch products for a fraction of the price of Bose. Energy, Paradigm, Infinity, Klipsch, Polk Audio are all fantastic brands that will cost you one tenth of what a Bose system will, and sound one hundreds times as good. If you are serious about home theatre and sound quality, please, please, buy your speakers from a compnay that spends their money on building quality products rather than advertising them on TV.
The saddest part is that there is nothing inherently bad about such products, if they sold for a reasonable price. Their kitchen systems are not half bad if you don’t take what they cost into consideration. But as it stands, they are a rip off, and I say, stay away!
